Amazon Shop Direct: What Brands Need to Know

Amazon has spent two decades keeping shoppers inside its own checkout. Amazon Shop Direct changes that as part of Amazon's push into AI shopping in 2026, it's now sending Amazon referral traffic to brands that aren't even on Amazon. Here's what it actually is, and what to do about it.

What Is Shop Direct?

Shop Direct is Amazon's external merchant program an AI-powered discovery feature on Amazon.com, the Amazon Shopping app, and the Amazon Rufus shopping assistant. It surfaces products that aren't sold on Amazon's own marketplace, pulled from merchant product feeds, and labels them clearly as “Shop Direct” in search results.

The core idea: if a customer searches for a specific brand Amazon doesn't carry, Amazon still shows it then sends the customer to the merchant's own website to buy it. For DTC brands on Amazon's periphery ones with no Seller Central presence at all  this is a new, unpaid source of Amazon referral traffic.

How It Works

1.   Customer searches on Amazon

2.   Amazon shows an eligible external product, labeled “Shop Direct”

3.   Customer taps it and gets a notice they're leaving Amazon

4.   They land on the merchant's own website

5.   Amazon merchant checkout happens entirely on the merchant's own site, outside Amazon's system

No Seller Central account required. No Amazon fulfillment. The product just needs to exist in a synced feed.

Shop Direct vs. a Traditional Listing

A traditional Amazon listing is sold, fulfilled, and supported entirely inside Amazon's marketplace. A Shop Direct product works differently on every count:

Seller: traditional: a registered Amazon seller. Shop Direct: any external merchant, no Seller Central account needed.

Checkout: traditional: completed on Amazon. Shop Direct: completed on the merchant's own site.

Fulfillment: traditional: FBA or FBM. Shop Direct: handled entirely by the merchant, using its own systems.

Seller Central: traditional: required. Shop Direct: not required.

In short: Amazon still helps the customer find the product, but everything after that payment, delivery, returns is on the merchant, not Amazon.

Shop Direct ≠ Amazon Buy for Me

These get conflated, but they're different experiences:

Shop Direct redirects the customer to the merchant's site to complete checkout themselves.

Amazon Buy for Me lets Amazon's AI complete the purchase from the merchant's site on the customer's behalf, using their saved Amazon payment and address without the customer ever leaving Amazon.

Buy for Me is only available on select Shop Direct products; eligibility varies by merchant and listing. Every Buy for Me product is part of Shop Direct, but not every Shop Direct product supports Buy for Me.

What Merchants Should Actually Do

Check if you're already in it. Search your own brand on Amazon and see what shows up, and whether Amazon's Rufus shopping assistant surfaces it in conversation.

Set up proper Amazon product feed integration. Titles, pricing, images, and availability sync from your feed (via Feedonomics, Salsify, or CEDCommerce) stale data shows up immediately when a customer lands on your site.

Make sure your site can convert. Shop Direct traffic lands directly on your checkout, not Amazon's page speed, mobile readiness, and clear return policies matter more here than usual.

Confirm where “Shop Direct” links actually send people. Product matching isn't always perfect.

The Bottom Line

Shop Direct is Amazon positioning itself as a discovery layer for the entire web, not just its own marketplace. For DTC brands not selling on Amazon, it's free access to Amazon referral traffic. For sellers already on Amazon, it's a new surface worth watching as Amazon AI shopping expands through 2026 visibility here depends on feed accuracy, not ad spend.
