Amazon DSP: Is It Worth Adding to Your Ad Strategy?

Amazon DSP gets brought up a lot by agencies pitching bigger ad budgets, and a lot less by anyone explaining what it actually does differently from the Sponsored ads most sellers already run. It is a real tool with a real use case, but it solves a different problem than Sponsored Products or Sponsored Display, and it is not the right next step for every account that has simply run out of things to do in Seller Central.

What Amazon DSP Actually Is

DSP stands for demand side platform. Where Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands only run inside Amazon's own search results and product pages, Amazon DSP buys display and video ad space programmatically across a much wider footprint, including other websites, apps, Amazon-owned properties like IMDb and Twitch, and in some cases connected TV. The ads are built around Amazon's shopping and browsing data, so you can target people based on what they have searched for or purchased on Amazon, even while they are reading an unrelated article somewhere else entirely.

How It's Different From Sponsored Display

This is the comparison that confuses the most people, because Sponsored Display also shows ads off Amazon in some placements. The real difference is reach and control. Sponsored Display is self-service, runs inside Seller Central or Advertising Console, and is built for simpler retargeting, like reaching shoppers who viewed your product but did not buy. Amazon DSP is a far larger programmatic buying system with audience targeting options, inventory access, and reporting depth that goes well beyond what Sponsored Display offers, and historically it required either a managed service agreement with Amazon or going through an approved third-party partner, though a self-service option has become more accessible over time.

Who Amazon DSP Actually Makes Sense For

DSP tends to pay off for brands that already have Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands running efficiently and are trying to build awareness or reach new audiences beyond people already searching for their product on Amazon. It also suits brands running a real funnel strategy, using DSP for upper funnel awareness and retargeting, with Sponsored ads handling the bottom-funnel conversion. Established brands with enough budget to meet typical minimum spend requirements and enough existing sales data to build useful audiences get the most out of it.

It makes far less sense for a brand still working out basic Sponsored Products targeting, or one without the budget to run it at a scale where programmatic buying actually has enough data to optimize against. An agency recommending DSP before your core PPC campaigns are profitable is usually recommending it because DSP budgets are larger, not because it is the right next step for your account.

What It Costs and How It's Managed

Amazon DSP budgets typically run meaningfully higher than a Sponsored Products budget, and historically have required a minimum monthly spend when going through Amazon's managed service. A growing self-service option lowers that barrier, but still demands more setup, more creative assets, and more ongoing management than Sponsored ads, which is why most sellers running DSP either work with an Amazon DSP agency or a dedicated in-house team rather than managing it the way they manage Sponsored campaigns.

A Practical Way to Decide

Ask whether your Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands campaigns are already converting profitably, whether you have a specific reason to reach people before they start searching rather than after, and whether you have the budget and creative assets to run display and video campaigns properly. If the honest answer to any of those is no, the better use of time and money is usually fixing what is already running before adding a new, more complex channel on top of it.

The Bottom Line

Amazon DSP is a genuine upper-funnel tool, not a bigger version of Sponsored ads. It is worth considering once your existing campaigns are profitable and you specifically want to build awareness or retarget audiences beyond Amazon's own search results. Added before that point, it usually just means spending more money on a channel that was never going to be the problem.
